Overview
The monthly seminars are interactive, 60-minute session that supports the biomedical research careers of junior faculty at the K or career development level. Sessions are organized as peer mentoring, led by the participants and facilitated by senior faculty with expertise in career development and federal grant funding. Responsibilities of selected participants include active participation and engagement and sharing of current research products, which may include grant applications, manuscripts, abstracts or presentations.
There are two tracks. The first track is designed for junior faculty who have K12 awards or are considering application to a K12 or individual K grant award, or equivalent award, in the next one to two years. The first track meets for each month virtually. Junior Faculty present research projects for peer review guided by two senior biomedical researchers.
The second track (“K to R”) is designed for more advanced Junior Faculty. Members include current individual K grant awardees, or others who are planning to submit their first R grant. This group meets in person with the first hour for peer engagement and review of peers’ aims or other grant sections, and the second hour a moderated discussion led by two senior biomedical researchers.
For all tracks we ask for:
- A commitment to attend 10 of the planned 12 sessions for one year
- Agreement to share short- and long-term career plans with the group
- Agreement to prepare and present research progress at least twice during the year with provision of materials (such as specific aims, manuscript drafts, responses to review) one week before the session
- Agreement to be an active participant in reviewing others’ materials and contributing to discussions focused on the research of the other JFF members
