Tufts CTSI Pilot Studies Program

Request for Applications: 2010 Tufts CTSI Pilot Studies Grants

The application period is now closed for the 2010 Tufts CTSI Pilot Studies Grants.  Thank you to all applicants.

Eligibility : Eligible applicants are multi-disciplinary research teams in which at least one member is a full-time faculty member of Tufts University.  Applicants must be of faculty rank (or pending faculty rank) and meet eligibility by the institution’s rules to apply for federal funding.  Other team members can include eligible faculty members from all Tufts CTSI member institutions and community partners.  The investigators must represent distinct disciplines and bring synergistic skills that are relevant to the work described.

In supporting projects, Tufts CTSI seeks projects that are translational, i.e., that move development of a treatment or technology along the translational pathway (from bench to bedside, from bedside to clinical use, and from clinical use to public benefit and policy), bringing the study approach closer to having an impact on health.  Particularly attractive will be those projects that will accelerate this translation and will have specific outcomes that will demonstrate such progress.  We are also interested in those projects that are innovative and use new and novel research methods.  In all these respects, Tufts CTSI is looking for projects that will impact health.

Types of Awards : The number and type of awards will be based on the distribution between meritorious applications in the mechanisms described below. For 2010, there will be a single solicitation for these awards.

Catalyst Grants

·         Catalyst Grants are intended for multidisciplinary research teams of at least two investigators, representing the basic, clinical, and/or applied sciences. These collaborators must have developed a preliminary hypothesis underlying the research, and must have a defined plan for eventually seeking extramural funding (R01 awards, SBIR awards with industry collaborators, or equivalent).

·         The awards will be up to $30,000 per award.  Money can be used for salaries, support staff such as research assistants and technicians, clinical support, laboratory research, supplies, or for help with biostatistics and biomedical informatics.

·         The objective of these grants is to develop sufficient preliminary data to secure future extramural funding.  Therefore, the outcome for a Catalyst Award should be an application for extramural funding (e.g., R01, P series, SBIR with industry collaboration, or equivalent).

Planning Grants

The Planning Grants are intended for multidisciplinary research teams of at least two investigators composed of basic, clinical, and/or applied sciences, and provide an early mechanism through which a minimum of two scientists can develop partnerships and initial hypotheses or study questions. The Planning Grants are intended as small awards to encourage new collaborative efforts and development of new hypotheses or methods.

·         Planning Grants will be limited to $1,500 to $10,000 per award to begin collaborative ventures and hypothesis refinement.

·         Funding will be for a maximum of one year.

·         The goal of the Planning Grants is to make the project eligible for a Catalyst Award or other translational pilot programs.
