Laurel K. Leslie, MD, MPH is an Associate Professor at Tufts University School of Medicine, with a primary appointment in the Department of Medicine and holds a secondary appointment in Pediatrics. She is an active faculty member in the Sackler School of Graduate Biomedical Sciences. She is also the Associate Director of Community Engagement at Tufts Clinical and Translational Science Institute (CTSI).
Dr. Leslie received her BA from Harvard University and her MD from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. She completed her residency training in Primary Care Pediatrics and fellowship training in Developmental-Behavioral Pediatrics at the University of California, San Francisco, where she also served as Chief Medical Resident. Subsequently, she served as a Research Scientist at the Child and Adolescent Services Research Center (CASRC) at Rady Children's Hospital and Health Center in San Diego. While at CASRC, Dr. Leslie received a Masters of Public Health in Epidemiology and Biostatistics at San Diego State University. Dr. Leslie joined the ICRHPS at Tufts Medical Center in the Fall of 2006.
Dr. Leslie's research interests focus on the identification and treatment of developmental and mental health needs of children and adolescents across the health, mental health, and school sectors. Specific areas of inquiry include the impact of guidelines and policy initiatives on youth service use and outcomes and collaborative models of care across sectors that incorporate the child and family as active participants in care. Her research portfolio includes a K08 award from the National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH) investigating the identification and treatment of children with Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) in primary care settings; funding from the Charles H. Hood Foundation researching rates of psychotropic medication use in youth in CW/CPS across 92 communities in the U.S. and factors predicting geographic disparities; and funding from the Deborah Munroe Noonan Memorial Research Fund regarding the identification and treatment of developmental and mental health problems in young children ages 0-2 years receiving child welfare/child protective services. She also holds a Distinguished Fellowship from the William T. Grant Foundation focused on the integration of research, policy, and practice in partnership with the Massachusetts Department of Children and Families.
Dr. Leslie's expertise in behavioral and developmental pediatrics is recognized nationally; work with the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) and National Initiative on Children's Healthcare Quality (NICHQ) includes development of an ADHD toolkit; the eQIPP interactive, web-based CME module on ADHD; and efforts on the Task Force on Foster Care. She is also principal author of a nationally recognized website on child development, www.howkidsdevelop.com, as well as a second site, www.help4kidswithadhd.com. Dr. Leslie also maintains an active interest in defining the future of pediatric practice and education, participating in the Task Force on the Future of Pediatric Education II (FOPE II), the Pediatric Leadership Alliance, and the American Board of Pediatrics' current Residency Review and Redesign Project (R3P).
